Indiana University Libraries is seeking a DevOps Engineer for its Avalon Media System team located in Bloomington, Indiana. Avalon Media System is an open source software system written in Ruby on Rails, co-developed by Indiana University Libraries and Northwestern University Library, which enables libraries and archives to more easily provide online access to audio and video collections. Development of Avalon is supported in part by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
As part of the Avalon Media System team, the successful candidate will collaborate with other team members in the development of the University's Avalon Media System; head the design and implementation of a software-as-a-service (SaaS) deployment model for Avalon, including evaluation, testing, and recommendation of cloud hosting options; design of a cloud deployment architecture; development and implementation of tools for deploying and monitoring multiple Avalon instances in a cloud environment to support multiple tenants; design, implement, and maintain tools and installation packages for deployment of Avalon in a locally-hosted environment, for distribution with the open source Avalon Media System software, including evaluating and selecting deployment automation tools, developing scripts to support automated application deployment and upgrade, creating virtual machine or container images, and contributing to the Avalon Media System release process; and provide system administration for Avalon Media System SaaS offering, including setting up Avalon instances for new institutions, planning and implementing upgrades of Avalon for multiple institutional users, monitoring systems and applications for potential problems, and security vulnerabilities or intrusion attempts, and working with cloud service providers, IU IT security staff, and others to ensure security of all systems.
