SOFTWARE ENGINEER , Brain and Cognitive Sciences-MIT Early Childhood Cognition Lab , to guide scaling of the open-source online platform Lookit , which allows researchers to design and families to participate in webcam-based developmental studies. Lookit's mission is to lower barriers to conducting and participating in rigorous, reproducible developmental research. Will be responsible for the entire stack, including front-end interactive study sessions using Ember components and backend API and participant and researcher interfaces written in Python (Django) using PostgreSQL. Duties include strategic planning of the engineering process and prioritizing feature development; developing scalable tools to support research workflows and improve the participant experience; contributing to a library of experimental components researchers use to specify study protocols; coordinating and conducting code reviews of contributions from other codebase contributors; arranging/overseeing usability testing and adapting UI based on feedback; managing automatic code deployment and hosting of materials on a cloud-based platform; writing documentation and incorporating unit tests; hiring/managing contractors; and ensuring the security of personally-identifiable data.
REQUIRED : three years' web application development experience, including proficiency in at least one front-end (e.g., Angular, Ember, React) and at least one server-side (e.g., Django, Rails) framework; experience deploying and maintaining secure web applications in a production environment; comfort with distributed version control; and excellent communication, time management, and project planning skills. Preferred skills/experience: bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical field; interest in child development and/or open science; history of contributions to open-source projects; extensive experience with Python and/or Ember; and familiarity with DevOps tools (including Docker, Groovy, and Jenkins), WebRTC for streaming video, mobile development, human subjects research, RESTful API design, and/or application of accessibility best practices.
