| Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) invites nominations and applications for the position of director of the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering (PIBSE). |
Created in 1940 by the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute, Illinois Institute of Technology is a private, technology-focused research university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, applied technology, and law. One of 21 institutions that comprise the Association of Independent Technological Universities, Illinois Tech is recognized for providing exceptional preparation for professions that require technological sophistication, an innovative mindset, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
The Pritzker Institute was established in 1982 as a research-oriented organization with an endowment from Robert A. Pritzker, a distinguished alumnus of Illinois Tech. In time, the institute’s research activities led to the creation in 2002 of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the university. Currently, the Pritzker Institute acts as an umbrella organization that links biomedical science and engineering research activities across college and department boundaries. To date, five research centers exist within the Pritzker Institute, representing its current focus areas of interest. The director reports to the provost.
The new director will re-examine the structure, vision, and plan for the Pritzker Institute. Accordingly, we expect that the new director will:
-Have a history of visionary scientific leadership
-Have a significant record of external research funding, ideally including leadership of interdisciplinary projects or programs
-Lead fundraising efforts to build support for PIBSE’s strategic initiatives
-Maintain an active externally funded research program that is collaborative and inclusive
-Bring synergy between education and academic research in biomedical science and engineering
-Engage with students, faculty, and staff to help shape PIBSE’s culture and student experience
-Merit appointment as a tenured full professor in one of Illinois Tech’s academic units
The director will be responsible for the operational and strategic decision-making of PIBSE’s research facility, administration, communication, and fundraising. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with others in order to enhance the strategic vision for PIBSE and Illinois Tech. The director must have excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for developing relationships with deans, as well as a wide range of constituencies both within and outside the institute, and for enhancing PIBSE’s reputation, resources, and initiatives. Candidates must have exceptional scholarly and/or professional experience and leadership commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor.
Nominations and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Review of applications will begin on receipt. All applicants must submit a letter of interest, a CV, and a list of at least five references. Individuals from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. All inquiries, nominations, and applications will be treated in a confidential manner and the candidate will be alerted prior to any reference checks being conducted.
