LECMPA (Locomotive Engineers and Conductors Mutual Protective Association) is seeking a confident, curious underwriter/new business handler for our unique and highly specialized insurance. LECMPA is the nation’s only non-profit mutual insurer of wage loss due to discipline for union transportation workers. We have been in business since 1910, and maintain a small, congenial office in Southfield, Michigan. LECMPA has been recognized as a Michigan and national Great Place to Work in 2015 and 2016. We have received numerous prizes as a great service company as well.
We currently have approximately 29,000 members, who buy our coverage individually. We are not a benefit of employment or of union membership.
Our underwriting is unique to our special coverage, and is based upon union membership and craft. We perform our own risk analysis, with the assistance of our IT department and our independent auditor. Our policyholders are all union transportation workers. Most are railroad union members; we also have a number of professional delivery drivers and truckers.
Skills necessary to succeed at the job:
1. Excellent customer service skills; the ability to solve problems, explain our coverages and interact with our rail and trucker clients;
2. Ability to learn and to explain our underwriting requirements, application and application process;
3. The ability to communicate by phone and in writing regarding underwriting, policy issuance and similar subjects;
4. Enthusiasm for our mission: bringing financial security to transportation workers and their families.
We have an excellent benefit package which includes profit sharing, 401K, disability, full medical, optic and dental coverage. Flexible hours. Salary is negotiable. Insurance experience is beneficial but not required.
