This position, under general supervision, performs a variety of indoor and outdoor maintenance activities of Minnesota State College Southeast and is responsible for all cleaning and general maintenance services throughout the campus. The position shall provide a safe, clean environment for faculty, staff and students performing heavy custodial and grounds work, including the operation of heavy equipment to provide lawn care and snow removal as well as proper maintenance and repair of the building and grounds and related work, as required. This position is considered an essential employee and will assist in safety, security, maintenance, and operations of Minnesota State College Southeast's Winona Campus. A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required for this position. The workweek for this position is Monday-Thursday (1:00 pm - 9:30 pm) Friday (8:30am-5pm).
Maintain Building Grounds to Ensure Proper Maintenance and Repair
Maintain assigned facilities in a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly condition by performing routine custodial and light maintenance duties. This position ensures that classrooms, offices, public spaces, and support areas meet the College's cleanliness and appearance standards on a daily basis, and performs other related duties as assigned.
Clean and maintain offices, corridors, classrooms, study and practice rooms, staff and faculty lounges, conference rooms, hallways, entrances, auditoriums, laboratories, restrooms, and other assigned areas.
Vacuum, sweep, dust, damp?mop, and wet?mop floors, walls, doors, entrances, and baseboards.
Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors as scheduled or needed.
Wash windows, glass surfaces, doors, and building entrances.
Empty, clean, and sanitize trash receptacles, recycling containers, and outdoor ashtrays; replace liners as required.
Remove trash and recycling from offices, classrooms, and common areas and transport materials to designated disposal locations.
Clean, sanitize, and restock restroom fixtures, including sinks, toilets, urinals, mirrors, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and toilet paper holders.
Maintain adequate supplies of restroom and cleaning materials; notify supervisor when inventory is low.
Clean and dust furniture, fixtures, lamps, shelving, and vending machines.
Arrange and reset furniture, tables, and chairs in classrooms, meeting rooms, and event spaces according to established layouts.
Clean chalkboards, whiteboards, erasers, trays, and marker rails.
Perform daily dust mopping or vacuuming and scheduled deep cleaning of assigned areas.
Identify and report facility maintenance issues, safety concerns, or damaged equipment to the appropriate department.
Follow established safety procedures, chemical handling guidelines, and proper use of cleaning equipment and supplies.
Assist with setup and cleanup for campus events, meetings, or special activities as needed.
Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, floor machines, and auto-scrubbers safely and effectively.
Maintain a professional appearance of facilities to support a positive learning and working environment.
Set-up and Delivery for Campus Events
Assist with the set?up, delivery, and breakdown of furniture, equipment, and supplies for campus and community events to ensure events are prepared efficiently, safely, and in a timely manner. This role supports instructional, administrative, and public events across campus.
Assist with moving, arranging, and resetting furniture, tables, chairs, stages, and equipment for on?campus events, community events, concerts, commencements, meetings, and other special functions.
Set up classrooms, auditoriums, conference rooms, and outdoor spaces according to event layouts, diagrams, or instructions.
Deliver supplies, materials, and equipment to designated locations across campus as scheduled.
Assist in receiving, unloading, and staging large shipments of equipment and supplies.
Assemble and disassemble furniture, risers, platforms, and other event?related equipment as needed.
Coordinate with Facilities, Event Services, faculty, staff, and event organizers to ensure proper setup requirements are met.
Ensure event areas are clean, safe, and accessible before, during, and after events.
Break down event setups promptly following event completion and return furniture and equipment to their proper storage locations.
Identify and report damaged furniture or equipment and submit work orders as needed.
Follow proper lifting techniques and safety procedures when handling furniture and equipment.
Assist with short?notice or emergency event support as required.
Maintain flexibility to work varied schedules, including evenings or weekends, when necessary to support campus events.
Assist with Security and Building Checks to Ensure Safety of College Community
Assist with maintaining a safe and secure campus environment by performing routine building security checks and monitoring assigned areas. This role supports the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors by identifying potential security and safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
Perform daily and scheduled building checks to ensure facilities are secure and operating safely.
Secure assigned work areas by locking doors, checking emergency exits, and ensuring interior and exterior lighting is functioning properly.
Monitor buildings and common areas for unauthorized individuals; politely encourage unauthorized persons to leave or contact a supervisor or Campus Security as appropriate.
Report suspicious activity, security concerns, or emergencies promptly to a supervisor and/or Campus Security.
Maintain privacy and confidentiality in offices and workspaces by ensuring desks, file drawers, and materials are not disturbed and that computers and electronic equipment are not accessed or used without authorization.
Turn in lost and found items to the appropriate department or designated location in accordance with College procedures.
Identify, report, and document safety hazards such as faulty electrical cords, loose carpet or floor tiles, damaged doors, or malfunctioning lights.
Correct minor safety issues when possible or submit maintenance work orders for necessary repairs.
Ensure exits, fire lanes, and walkways remain clear and accessible at all times.
Assist with opening and closing procedures for buildings or spaces as assigned.
Follow established safety, security, and emergency response procedures at all times.
Communicate safety or security concerns effectively to supervisors, Facilities, or Campus Security.
Assist with the Safety compliance requirements of the college.
Assist in supporting the College's safety compliance efforts to ensure a safe, healthy, and complaint learning and working environment. This role helps implement and maintain safety-related programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Assist with monitoring compliance with occupational safety, health, and environmental regulations.
Support safety inspections, audits, and walkthroughs to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
Help maintain safety records, reports, and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
Assist with coordination of safety training programs, drills, and compliance-related communications.
Support incident, accident, and near-miss reporting processes, including follow-up documentation.
Collaborate with Facilities, Human Resources, and academic departments to promote campus-wide safety awareness and best practices.
Salary Range:
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Ability to perform routine custodial and light maintenance duties, including cleaning, floor care, waste removal, and event setup.
Ability to safely operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, floor machines, and auto?scrubbers.
Working knowledge of proper cleaning methods, supplies, and safe chemical handling procedures.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Ability to identify and report maintenance, safety, and security concerns.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy when working in offices and secured areas.
Physical ability to perform job duties, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling furniture and equipment.
Ability to work varied schedules, including evenings and weekends, as required to support campus operations and events.
Preferred Qualification
Two (2) or more years of custodial, facilities, or building maintenance experience, preferably in a college, school, or public facility setting.
Experience with floor maintenance procedures, including stripping, waxing, and buffing.
Experience supporting event setup and breakdown for meetings, conferences, or large?scale events.
Familiarity with workplace safety standards, OSHA guidelines, or institutional safety compliance practices.
Experience conducting building security checks or supporting campus safety procedures.
Knowledge of recycling and waste management practices.
Basic experience using computerized work order or maintenance tracking systems.
Demonstrated ability to provide courteous customer service to students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Ability to recognize hazards and take appropriate corrective or reporting action.
Other Requirements
The physical ability to perform job duties, including standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50lbs, and regularly pushing, pulling, and moving equipment and furniture.
