The Database Developer will be part of a dynamic team that maintains a clinical data repository (CDR) used for clinical research activities at the University of Minnesota. The individual will work closely with other DBAs, Clinical Data Analysts and project Manager to provide expertise on data collection, extraction and delivery.
Database Development 60%
Interact with other technical team members to analyze source system data to understand the data structure, definitions and anomalies.
Developing and optimizing SQL statements, stored procedures and views using industry best practices for security and efficiency.
Mentoring colleagues in the writing and optimizing of SQL queries.
Performance optimization, including query tuning, process structuring / scheduling, schema adjustments, code refinements, and scaling analysis.
Perform extract, transformation and load (ETL) functions.?
Application Development / Support 20%
Develop internal web applications to interact with and manage large databases and systems.
Implement and support enterprise level research applications.
Systems Support and Maintenance 20%
Develop and maintain technical design documents.
Assist in the research and selection of tools, products and frameworks as necessary to support business initiatives.
Support existing applications and databases and serve as a resource for customer questions and problem resolution.
Monitor systems to ensure research applications and databases are running at peak performance.
Remediate failures of automated jobs quickly.
Bachelor's degree in technology related field and two years of work experience in the areas of database design and administration. Or, unrelated BA/BS and four years of work experience in the areas of database design and administration
A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with a major relational data management system. (e.g. Oracle, MS SQL Server)
A minimum of two (2) years of experience developing PL/SQL and/or T-SQL, stored procedures, indexes, partitioning, and database tuning
A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with ETL tools. (e.g. Pentaho, SQL Server Integration Services, and / or IBM Data Stage).
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in systems design and administration.
Bachelor's degree in technology related field
Previous experience in the design and maintenance of enterprise-wide database systems. Experience within a healthcare database/data warehouse setting will be considered a plus.
Familiar with source control tools, such as Git, and continuous integration systems (Jenkins).
Quality workmanship with an eye for detail.
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and superior human relation skills.
Proven ability to meet deadlines using effective organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks and manage projects, and work with minimal supervision.
