The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) manages and maintains airports, bridges, tunnels, bus terminals, commuter rail and seaports that are critical to the metropolitan New York-New Jersey region’s trade and transportation capabilities. It is the mission of the PANYNJ to identify and meet the critical transportation infrastructure needs of the bi-state region’s businesses, residents, and visitors providing the highest quality, most efficient transportation services that move people and goods within the region, providing access to the rest of the nation and to the world, and strengthening the economic competitiveness of the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region.
The Port Department is one of the five line-department businesses of the PANYNJ. It is responsible for managing the largest port complex on the East Coast and the third largest in the nation. It operates a highly competitive and dynamic business in a very complex political environment. The Port has become an economic engine that provides nearly 400,000 jobs in the region and nearly $26 billion in personal income and $65 billion in business income.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director of PANYNJ, the Port Director directs and coordinates the overall operations of Port Authority facilities in New York and New Jersey. He or she develops and implements programs to enhance operational efficiency and service levels, manages capital, operating and maintenance costs to achieve optimum net revenue, ensures that operating facilities are safe, secure, reliable, well maintained and accessible, develops and implements major projects such as dredging and transportation infrastructure improvements, coordinates with other governmental entities on port and cargo issues, maintains contact with key stakeholders (personnel, tenants, public officials, and other port partners), ensures compliance with agency policies, procedures and management initiatives, provides for the development of staff and directs staff in the development of the department’s long-range strategic business planning efforts, annual budget and long-range forecast.
Position Requirements: The Port Director candidate will be a seasoned and dynamic professional with proven leadership in the transportation industry.
Requires at least 10 years’ progressively responsible senior level management experience, preferably for an organization of similar size and complexity. The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: Thorough knowledge of federal directives and regulations governing port security, operations and management; extensive knowledge of the port/cargo industry and marine terminal management and demonstrated experience managing, leading and developing a large, diverse professional staff. He or she will have experience engaging with Boards of Directors, strong financial/analytical skills with previous responsibility for complex budgets and capital expenditures. Innovative problem solving, adept in delivering superior customer service and exceptional interpersonal, writing, presentation and overall communication skills. Proven experience leading, mentoring and developing staff is a must.
