Carpet and Floor Care Specialist
Working in accordance with a detail project plan, the incumbent performs specific cleaning and maintenance functions to provide a clean, safe environment. Areas of responsibility will include care of hard floors and tile surfaces, vacuuming carpets, carpet spotting to remove gum, paint, and other foreign matters, and carpet shampooing and extraction. Performs other duties as assigned including, but not limited, to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage and special event support. Duties include but are not limited to:
Determines equipment and supplies needed to perform required tasks by looking at a floor or carpet and determining what needs to be done to ensure a high quality of standard.
Refinishes hard surfaces and resilient tile floors, adjacent moldings, elevator tracks, trim, etc.
Performs light, medium and heavy shower scrubbing using appropriate solutions and equipment.
Provides appropriate number of coats of finish required. Operates floor machines that automatically dispense cleaning solutions, scrub and pick up dirty solutions.
Determines appropriate carpet cleaning technique. Uses rotor and extraction equipment, damp butts, shampoos, vacuums, fans as necessary in carpet cleaning process.
Transports supplies and equipment needed to perform task and returns equipment to appropriate storage area. Informs supervisor of equipment supply and maintenance needs.
Cleans hallways, entrance ways, stairways and elevators.
Vacuums and spot cleans carpets and upholstery; frees carpets of rips and strings, tapes down clean edges as needed; cleans all surfaces and removes water marks and smudges from all surfaces; cleans and dusts lamp shades and bulbs; replaces burned out light bulbs; empties or sifts ash urns; cleans, washes and dusts inside and outside ground floor level window sills of all exterior windows; cleans and polishes brass fixtures and rails; dusts and frees handrails of cobwebs; washes both sides of internally placed windows; washes and dusts high and low; pulls trash and cleans trash receptacles; cleans door tracks and thresholds, cleans elevator tracks, sweeps and mops floors free of debris and dirt; cleans stairwells, landings, stairways, exterior entrances, ramps and landings and other areas as assigned.
Cleans administrative spaces, laboratories and classrooms.
Incumbent will spot clean and shampoo carpets and upholstery using the acceptable method of cleaning, dust and mop floors, dust and clean supply and return vents, replace burned out light bulbs, clean trash containers, dust high and low, clean light diffusers, clean interior sills of exterior windows, clean interior and outside at ground level of exterior windows, dust and wipe venetian blinds, dust and polish furniture, remove litter from planters and other spaces and items as assigned.
Ensures economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University and department resources. Draws and /or requisitions supplies, parts and materials needed. Uses such items economically to avoid undue costs. Keeps supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
Suggests improvements in service to improve unit operations. Provides supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.
High School Diploma or high school equivalency preferred
One year of custodial work experience and one-year minimum floor care experience preferred
Basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak in order to understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures
Must be able to relay custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center
Required to complete a training program in building cleaning
A valid driver's license from Maryland, Virginia or District of Columbia
