The Project Traffic Engineer will be responsible for performing and coordinating engineering design on transportation projects. Candidate is expected to use knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. Candidate will serve as technical advisor to less experienced engineers, lead design engineer on projects, and, depending on the size and complexity of the task, be required to act as Project Manager.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Project roles and responsibilities will primarily require performance of various design and study related traffic engineering tasks on a day-to-day basis
The performance of field investigations, data collection and/or as-built design will be performed intermittently
Candidate should be organized and prepared to be responsible for leading a team of multi-disciplined engineers in design and performing design oversight
Performance of various traffic engineering design tasks, including the design of traffic signals, preparation of traffic signing, striping and pavement marking plans, design of intersection lighting and electrical plans, design of intelligent transportation systems (ITS); and the preparation of detours, Transportation Management Plans and Traffic Control Plans
Traffic planning/studies work include determining traffic signals warrants, performing crash data analysis, performing traffic operational analysis, designing improved signal timings, as well as analyzing roadway corridors and developing travel demand forecasts using transportation planning models
Candidate will also be expected to support in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E), developing construction cost estimates, and attend client meetings
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
Candidate should have at least 4 years of experience in the above listed duties
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate Required
Professional Engineer (PE) License or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire is preferred
Experience using traffic engineering analysis and planning software, including HCS, Synchro Trafficware, VISSIM, and/or Aimsun is required
Experience using engineering design CAD software, such as AutoCAD and Microstation is required
Work experience in New Jersey with NJDOT, County and/or local municipalities is a plus
Work experience in New York with NYSDOT, NYCDOT, and/or PANYNJ is a plus
Proficiency in discipline specific design software
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Excellent written and communication skills
Practical knowledge of construction of traffic control devices is desirable
Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
