The Department The City of Pico Rivera strives to support and enhance a high quality of life for the City's residents, businesses and visitors by providing well planned, environmentally sensitive, cost effective infrastructure and services to promote public health, personal safety and transportation. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for City residents through responsive, efficient, and effective delivery of services to every neighborhood and by reflecting a can-do attitude with our customers and stakeholders. More specifically the Department of Public Works is responsible for the engineering, permitting, maintenance and operation of the City's infrastructure, including: streets, sidewalks, roadway medians, alleys, public parking lots, traffic signals, etc. Public Works also manages maintenance and public service programs such as Graffiti Abatement, Tree trimming, Street Sweeping, Utilities and Public Facilities such as municipal parks.
The Position The Assistant Engineer will perform entry level professional engineering work in the design, investigation, and construction of public works projects. General supervision is provided by a higher level professional engineer. Technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher level professional engineer positions. Assignments may require indirect supervision of technical engineering positions.
This recruitment will be utilized to establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill other current or future vacancies in this classification throughout the City.
Employees work a 4/10 schedule. City Hall is open Monday through Friday 7:00AM - 5:30PM. 4/10 schedule will be discussed upon hire. The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform the following essential functions: - Write specifications, prepare plans, and calculate cost estimates for various engineering projects.
- Administer and enforce City codes and standards on engineering projects.
- Perform plan checks to ensure contractor compliance with City specifications.
- Prepare requests for proposals and contracts for consulting services.
- Manages capital improvement projects, as assigned.
- Coordinates assigned activities with consultants, other engineers, developers, contractors, other City Departments, and outside agencies.
- Respond to citizen complaints concerning engineering problems.
- Perform complex engineering calculations.
- Perform field inspections of various engineering projects.
- Analyze materials and design data submitted to the City.
- Determine conformance of parcel and subdivision maps and improvement plans to City requirements; maintain status of parcel and subdivision maps.
