The Ball Helix Bioinformatics and Data Analysis team is searching for an associate scientist to support bioinformatics data analysis and quality assurance initiatives. The associate scientist will analyze bioinformatics datasets from a wide variety of plant species, design databases and assist in the organization of complex, diverse datasets. The ideal team member will be able to collaborate with key partners within Ball to develop rigorous experimental designs and analyze resulting data using a wide variety of bioinformatics and biostatistics methods. This position would be a great fit for a creative individual with a passion for plants that loves solving complex data related problems.
Support the implementation of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) as it relates to data organization and management
Build data analysis workflows to support research initiatives at Ball Helix Central R&D
Analyze a wide range of data including but not limited to: high throughput sequencing and phenotyping data
Collaborate with other Ball team members and assist in the development of appropriate experimental designs
Provide statistical support for the Ball Helix Central R&D team
Develop and apply standard operating procedures to ensure consistent and reproducible data analyses
Manage projects to ensure timely delivery of expected data analysis outputs
Provide data analysis leadership to multi-disciplinary teams throughout Ball
Possesses essential interpersonal skills to be an effective, collaborative team member
Able to work independently on complex data analysis projects while acting as a resource for other team members
MSc degree in plant breeding, genetics, biochemistry, biology, computer science, biostatistics, statistics, data analytics or a BS with 3-5 years’ experience.
2+ years of experience in data analysis, data management or data warehousing
Experience in R (statistics, bioinformatics, data visualization)
2+ years’ experience designing and querying relational databases
Experience using cloud computing platforms (Microsoft Azure or AWS) is a plus
Experience working with software containerization (Docker, Singularity, Kubernetes) is a plus
Required Skills & Experience:
Ability to clean and organize datasets from a wide range of sources
Understanding of high throughput sequencing technologies and related data analysis methods (Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore)
Experience in Linux and R
Excellent communication skills to effectively discuss data analysis results with a diverse team of scientists and external partners
