The Coastal Research and Extension Center, Mississippi State University (MSU) is seeking a Research Program Manager. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Research Program Manager will work with faculty, research scientists, staff and students from Mississippi State University, as well as over 10 other universities, nonprofits and natural resource agencies to coordinate activities and data management for a multi-state 5 year project studying the impacts of prescribed fire on high marsh habitats in relation to Mottled Ducks and Yellow and Black Rails. Duties associated with this job will include hiring, training, and daily supervision of intermittent workers, coordinating marsh bird and vegetation surveys across coastal Mississippi and Alabama, and the capturing and banding Yellow and Black Rails. Another major duty of this position will involve data management, including creation and maintenance of project databases, meta-data creation and maintenance, preparation of data sets for analysis as well as short and long term data archiving, training and coordination of data collection practices with field crews, management and QA/QC of spatial and non-spatial data sets, web database management and assisting with presentation preparation, and report and manuscript writing.
A MSc degree in Wildlife Ecology, Conservation Biology, Wetland Ecology and/or Data Science/Analysis/Management or a closely related field. Demonstrated ability to coordinate large field-based projects and experience with data management and analysis.
It is preferred that the candidate has a background in avian or wetland ecology. We also prefer a demonstrated ability to manage large and diverse data sets and conduct data analyses; write summaries for reports and peer-reviewed publications; have demonstrated success working closely with management agencies on applied questions in wildlife conservation. Further preferred skills include use of SQL or web database development, Microsoft Access, ArcGIS, R, and scientific writing. Additional professional development opportunities will include report writing, scientific presentation preparation, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and publication of peer-reviewed articles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The individual should be self-motivated, able to work independently, work well in a multidisciplinary team environment, handle multiple tasks at once and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
There is an expectation the candidate will participate in field work during the summer and winter but will include stretches of office-based work. Some overnight travel will be required annually to participate in annual project meetings.
