Distributed Home Office/Telework Opportunity (Outside of D.C. Permitted)
The National Business Officers Association (NBOA), the only national association focused exclusively on supporting independent school business officers and business operations staff and fostering financial and operational excellence among independent PK-12 schools, is seeking a dynamic and creative professional to serve as its Director, Accounting and Tax Programs.
The Director, Accounting and Tax Programs, serves as the association’s primary advisor on independent school accounting and tax issues for NBOA members. In this role, the incumbent directs all aspects of content development and delivery related to nonprofit accounting and tax compliance issues affecting independent schools, ensures high-quality and member-responsive offerings, and supports additional programs, products and services related to independent school finance and business operations. This position reports directly to the Chief Learning Officer.

Lead the creation, delivery and management of NBOA’s accounting and tax programs, products and services, curating a comprehensive array of resources to assist NBOA member schools with a myriad of accounting and tax compliance priorities as they relate to independent schools and business operations.
Support existing finance and business operations programs, products and services, including the Composite Financial Index (CFI), NBOA Long-Range Financial Model, and serve as a catalyst for the development of additional tools and resources responsive to member needs.
Responsible for identifying, communicating and monitoring accounting and tax needs related to nonprofit independent school finance and business operations and providing appropriate resources based upon the diverse needs of NBOA’s member schools.
Maintain knowledge currency on relevant accounting and financial reporting standards and practices and tax compliance issues and regulations for nonprofit independent school business operations.
Draft accounting, financial reporting and tax resources and materials including Net Assets articles, e-newsletter briefs, comment letters, news alerts and talking points of relevance to business officers at independent schools.
Develop and deliver programs identifying timely topics for members on accounting, finance and tax issues including, but not limited to, NBOA, state and regional association meetings, webinars and online courses.
Respond to NBOA member inquiries and requests for information, both directly and by monitoring NBOA Connect and responding to general inquiries as needed.
Serve as staff liaison to the Controllers Council and cultivate member engagement among controllers.
Serve as a liaison between NBOA and accounting firms and tax professionals that serve the independent school community to foster positive relationships and identify emerging issues and potential opportunities for collaboration and program development.
Develop, implement and achieve mutually agreed annual performance goals and objectives.
Manage outside consultants as needed that support accounting and tax compliance work to help address member needs.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Learning Officer and the President and CEO within the general scope of job responsibilities and in support of organizational goals.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from an accredited college or university required; Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Accountancy (MAcc) preferred.
Current CPA certification required.
At least six years of progressive experience in not-for-profit accounting and tax, preferably specific to independent schools (through direct independent school business office employment and/or at a public accounting firm serving independent schools). Additional experience preferred.
Depth of knowledge and experience in nonprofit accounting and financial reporting standards and tax compliance issues related to independent schools. Experience with regulations impacting independent schools and independent school business operations preferred.
Demonstrated success in analyzing and advising constituents and stakeholders regarding complex financial or regulatory issues and provide consistent superior service to members in a knowledgeable and professional manner.
Demonstrated success in public speaking, making presentations, and speaking as an authority on accounting, finance and tax issues.
Exemplary written and oral communications and presentations skills, including the ability to summarize issues and the means to address them, and articulate positions and strategies concisely and quickly, in a manner that is useful and easily understood by members and staff.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, organize time and identify project resources.
Commitment to customer service within the staff and externally with members and other stakeholders.
Computer proficiency and expertise with Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and familiarity with new technologies and tools.
Requires intermittent travel throughout the year to NBOA conferences and meetings, for professional development, or to speak on other related programs.
