Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) oversees all sales, marketing, and business development activities for the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA).
The CCO is responsible for oversight of all Port maritime business, rail relationships, real estate development and new project development. ASPA lines of business include breakbulk, coal, forest products, container, RoRo, grain, steel and other cargoes.
Key Accountabilities for the CCO Include:
Establishing the port’s overall commercial strategy.
Leading and managing the commercial team which is responsible for each of the major lines of business.
Developing and managing the budget for the Commercial department.
Developing new relationships and managing existing relationships with all domestic and international customers including ocean carriers, terminal operators, rail carriers, beneficial cargo owners and freight forwarders/customs house brokers. Domestic and international travel to support these efforts as appropriate.
Working closely with internal and external partners to ensuring efficient, productive, and cost-effective cargo movement through the ASPA gateway.
As assigned by the CEO, engagement with Trade Associations, State and Federal Agencies.
Closely monitoring port and international shipping market trends and identifies challenges and opportunities for ASPA.
Providing trade and business development updates, reporting, research, analysis and recommendations to the CEO, Board of Directors, Board Committees and Senior Staff.
Identifying and recommending projects and programs that benefit ASPA, State of Alabama economic development objectives and Port stakeholders.
Customer contract development.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
10 years’ sales management experience in the ocean cargo transportation industry with at least three years in a senior sales and marketing role.
Commercial experience with breakbulk and bulk cargoes is strongly preferred.
Relationships with Class 1 and regional rail providers is desirable.
Experience related to real estate development and new project development preferred.
Exceptional communication and presentation skills are required.
Must have a proven track record of establishing and maintaining strong business relationships and managing, coaching and mentoring a sales/commercial team.
