The College of Liberal Arts is the largest college of the University, with over 16,000 students and more than 40 departments. LATIS (Liberal Arts Technologies and Innovation Services) provides the college with deep expertise and support for research, teaching, and administration. LATIS supports activities ranging from big data quantitative analysis and virtual reality sculpting to workflow design and data management. Software developers in LATIS provide consulting, design, architecture, programming, training and maintenance services for a wide variety of projects.
A successful person in this role will collaborate effectively with end-users, diverse teams within the University, and technical support/sustaining engineering teams to solve problems, and design new solutions. They will be excited about new and emerging technologies, and passionate about helping our students, staff, and faculty engage in world class education and research. You will have a habit of identifying problems before users do, then proposing solutions and building consensus. Major Job Functions:
60% - Software and Architecture Design
Collaborate with LATIS Technology Architect to implement overall technology strategy
Design and develop applications that enhance the functionality of the College and the success of our faculty and students, using industry standard techniques and technologies.
Provide process improvement support through consulting, scripting, and other types of small scale development and integrations.
Develop and implement future strategies for software development and platforms for CLA considering the business environment, strategic goals and resource availability.
Work with University community to implement development pipelines, devops tools, and other modern technology architecture.
25% - Application Maintenance & Support
Maintain and enhance existing business critical web applications, in consultation with product owners and LATIS employees.
Develop strategies for sunsetting applications when they reach obsolescence.
Serve as an escalation point for resolving complex and non-routine production, application, or website issues.
Provide recurring training and technical assistance as needed
15% - Professional Development & Administrative Tasks
Undertake professional development activities to maintain a high level of expertise in emerging technologies in the areas of database and web development.
Represent LATIS and/or college by participating on related committees and groups at the University. Share insights and best practices from our accomplishments with those groups to benefit the broader community.
Keep current with University of Minnesota policies and guidelines to ensure all applications and materials conform to University policy and professional standards.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Six years of work experience in the areas of application/web/systems development
Experience with any modern web stack (PHP, Rails, NodeJS, etc)
Experience using relational databases (MySQL, Postgres, etc)
Passion for the Liberal Arts and experience in higher education and/or familiarity with higher education support structures.
Solid understanding of user-experience focused design.
Experience building or contributing to open source projects and communities.
Experience with modern JS technologies like React and VueJS.
Interest in devops and cloud deployment.
Excitement about emerging technologies (AR, VR, IoT, etc).
Demonstrated experience working effectively with underserved and/or underrepresented populations.
