The Transportation Planning and Design section is looking for a talented Project Engineer to be involved in the planning and design of diverse transportation infrastructure projects. In this challenging position, day to day work includes working on concept planning, preliminary engineering and detailed design of Roads, Interchanges, Bridges, Bike Lanes, and a variety of other transportation projects.
You will be working closely with other design team staff, project managers & engineering professionals in day-to-day activities, leading the design of transportation infrastructure projects assigned to you.
Working in an integrated business model, the Project Engineer for Transportation Planning & Design is accountable for:
- Work with engineering technologists to produce high quality engineering drawings and recommend for design approval at various project stages (concept, preliminary, tender & construction) for roadways, walkways, alleys, cycling, and other transportation facilities with a strong focus on Arterial and Collector Roadways. Projects include rehabilitation, growth, and streetscapes as well as other infrastructure projects such as bridges or trails that have a transportation component.
- Work with the Project Management teams as a technical expert to facilitate the accurate and on time delivery of Transportation projects
- Provide quality review and assess design plans submitted by consultants by applying technical expertise to anticipate, identify, and resolve issues that may impact the project
- Ensure designs conform to Federal, Provincial, and Municipal transportation and construction standards as well as the City’s drafting standards
- Conduct site inspections and field work at various stages throughout the project life
- During construction review shop drawings and address unforeseen issues that arise during construction
- Provide oral and/or written feedback to consultants regarding engineering design and details that cannot meet current standards/procedures/guidelines
- Respond or provide support in response to inquiries related to design practises, standards, guidelines and design exceptions
- Provide technical feedback to project teams on concept and planning level proposals
- Coordinate roadway design projects with other utilities and outside agencies
- Assist and administer land-related issues as well as railway and pipeline related issues where third party projects impact road right-of-way and where City infrastructure projects may impact private property
- Review utility line assignments and other third party requests that impact the road right-of-way to ensure standard offsets and accommodation to current and future roadway alignments
- Attend public meetings, assist in preparing presentation materials, and present to the public
- Author design reports (concept / preliminary) and review technical writing
- Interpret traffic data, collision data, and prepare Synchro analysis to inform design decisions
- Provide general support in Transportation Planning and Design unit’s business operations
