The City of Great Falls, Montana, is situated on the Missouri River in the heart of Big Sky Country, approximately 50 miles east of the Continental Divide and 120 miles south of the Canadian border. Great Falls, with a population of about 59,000, is the county seat of Cascade County and the third-largest city in Montana.
The City of Great Falls seeks a new City Engineer who is an experienced and engaging leader who can work effectively with employees across the organization and confidently interact with the City Commission and members of the public. The City Engineer reports to the Public Works Director and manages a staff of 19 direct and indirect reports in the Engineering and Environmental Divisions as they oversee the approval, design, and construction of public infrastructure. As the Engineering and Environmental Services Branch Manager, this position focuses heavily on municipal infrastructure, project management, and development process review. The City Engineer also assists in the evaluation of transportation and traffic impacts of private development proposals; prepares traffic, utility, and other studies, designs, and reports; and acts as a technical adviser to other City staff and the Commission. Additionally, they may serve as Acting Public Works Director in the director’s absence.
This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, construction engineering technology, or a closely related field. Candidates should have at least 10 years of experience in civil engineering, environmental engineering, surveying/drafting, and public works/utilities planning, design, and construction, and at least five years of supervisory experience. The successful candidate should be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Montana or possess another state’s equivalent license. Montana Professional Engineer certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
