Reports To: Supervisor, Substation Design Engineering
Location: Atlanta, GA (Incumbent must work from this location)
Under general direction of a substation engineer, use accepted practices to prepare documents such as drawings and bills of materials which are used to build, operate and maintain electric power substations. Works primarily from verbal instructions or notes, in close support of the substation engineer and other designers. The key responsibilities for both physical and controls designers are listed below.
From minimal verbal instructions or notes and using accepted practices and standards, use AutoCAD as directed by the substation design engineer to create or revise drawings that detail electric power substations from 4kV to 500kV.
Physical designer responsibilities includes, but not limited to the following:
Arrangement of substation structures, equipment and their foundations.
Develop section views and other detail drawings that show how structures, equipment and bus work are installed.
Layout of conduits and other raceway.
Ground grid design and equipment grounding.
Develop bill of materials for structural steel and other outdoor equipment and materials.
Control designer responsibilities includes, but not limited to the following:
Development of single and three line diagrams.
Development of schematics and wiring diagrams for major substation equipment as well as auxiliary equipment such as AC and DC distribution panels and various junction boxes.
Develop bill of materials, SCADA point assignment sheets and cable pull lists.
Develop and maintain up to date CAD drafting standards.
Trains and directs the work of other designers and CAD drafters, checking for accuracy and efficiency, according to accepted procedures.
As assigned, perform other duties as required in the engineering and construction of electric power substations.
Generally requires an associate degree in engineering technology from an ABET accredited college or university. A combination of education and a demonstrated related experience may be substituted in lieu of education requirements.
Must have 7 to 10 years of CAD design experience preferably in the electric utility industry.
Requires good communication skills and demonstrated skills in CAD drafting techniques and applications.
Must have excellent attention to detail.
Most possess ability to multi-task.
