The CDL is a unit within the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 70+ and is located in downtown Oakland. Applicants who wish to work remotely will be considered. This position is not available for sponsorship.
As a Software Engineer at the California Digital Library, you will be developing systems using Python, Java and/or Ruby; MySQL and other databases; and Unix in an AWS environment. You will be learning and using machine learning languages and libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch and Scikit. And, you will be joining a team committed to software engineering best practices including Agile, test first development and user centered design.
As a member of CDL's Discovery and Delivery (D2D) team, you will be part of a team of software engineers, librarians and product managers supporting a wide variety of innovative library services. These include the UC libraries' integrated library system (UC Library Search); an interlibrary loan system and a system providing instant access to online books and journals. In addition, D2D provides collections analysis and decision support for library consortia and it develops and maintains a metadata management system for one of the world's largest digital libraries, HathiTrust. Newer projects include integrating machine learning into library systems and working with library consortia to provide more and better digital access to library materials.
This position offers an outstanding opportunity to a software engineer with a good knowledge of Python, Java and/or Ruby; a strong interest in learning machine learning languages and libraries; a commitment to good programming practices; a desire to work as part of an agile team and an interest in putting technology to work to provide innovative library services.

Software application development and maintenance programming: Design, develop, test, debug and document applications written in Python, Java, Ruby and other languages. Learn and use machine learning libraries and languages (i.e. PyTorch, Tensorflow, Spark, etc.) Analyze existing software and work to formulate logic for new complex systems. Performs complex data analysis and tests/debugs complex software.
Analyze business requirements: Participate in specification, design and implementation of on-line system features. Provide analytical support to define requirements for developing applications to support CDL's services. Analyze requirements for incorporating new features into existing software. Performs complex data modeling, performance and integration testing and builds interfaces.
Respond to error reports by analyzing defects, developing resolutions and preparing software releases to remedy problems or keep the application in sync with interconnected systems. Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes recommendations for approval of system and programming documentation.
Experience writing high quality code in languages like Python, Java or Ruby in a production environment.
Interest in learning and using machine learning languages and libraries such as Tensorflow, PyTorch, and SciKit. Strong statistical analysis skills are a plus.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Unix/Linux. Experience with AWS is a plus.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in relational database design and development and SQL. Experience with MySQL is a plus.
Knowledge of object-oriented design and design patterns. Knowledge of functional programming is a plus.
Demonstrated knowledge of standard software development principles, tools and best practices including user centered design; test driven development; source code management (git is a plus); continuous integration; regression testing; release planning and deployment; and system monitoring.
Enthusiastic learner with a demonstrated ability to learn and apply new skills and to share those skills with others.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills including math skills.Experience troubleshooting and refactoring complex code and integrations.
Able to work as an independent member of a strong team.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver clear and concise specifications, documentation and reports.Discreet, tactful, and mature in interpersonal communications within CDL and with external partners and vendors.
Demonstrated ability to perform competently under pressure working with all stakeholders to handle surprises and reprioritization of work.
Knowledge or expertise in the library technology domain, including metadata standards and information discovery tools and workflows.
Experience or interest in MVC frameworks (Spring, Rails, Sinatra, Flask, etc.).Experience or interest in some or all of these technologies -- React, RESTful APIs, and Docker.
Demonstrated knowledge of Agile software development techniques.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience writing code.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary: The recommended salary range is $90,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience.
