Richmond District Traffic Engineering (located in South Chesterfield, Virginia) is seeking two detail-oriented individuals to review, design, and produce traffic engineering plans in an accurate and precise manner utilizing good engineering judgement within established budgets/schedules and in adherence to federal/state standards, guidelines and policies. You will assist District staff during the preliminary engineering phase of project development, as it pertains to traffic engineering issues/components; review projects in the field; attend preliminary engineering meetings; serve as subject matter expert representing Traffic Engineering; and research traffic volume data for capacity analyses used in developing traffic control plans and detours. Review, design, and draft signing and pavement marking plans and transportation management plans; provide advice to designers, consultants, permit personnel, inspectors, and other personnel in traffic engineering pertaining to traffic engineering issues; and provide extraordinary customer service.

Knowledge of civil engineering principles/practices related to traffic control devices; and of project development process, policies, guidelines or regulations related to traffic control devices. Ability to train and evaluate the work of others; to plan, coordinate, prioritize multiple assignments within set timeframes; to interpret and use construction plans, Work Area Protection Manual, MUTCD, and Virginia Supplement to MUTCD; and to communicate effectively both orally and writing with internal/external customers. Skilled in MS Office and traffic engineering design programs. Valid driver’s license required.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field and/or equivalent experience and training may substitute for degree. Experience performing traffic control design and applying traffic engineering practices/policies. Experience using Sidra or Synchro. Experience performing report writing, evaluation, research, and training. Knowledge of highway civil engineering principles/practices, VDOT Road Design Manual, Road and Bridge Specifications/Standards preferred. Engineering in Training certification (EIT) or Professional Engineering license preferred.

This position is designated as essential, employees are required to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
