The Department of Comparative Pathobiology in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences (continuous term track; tenure track equivalent). We seek an individual with a strong interest and aptitude in teaching who will be able to contribute to teaching biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, and potentially other related areas in our DVM and graduate programs. The successful candidate will be an individual with strong research interests capable of establishing and maintaining an externally funded research program as an independent investigator. While any discipline will be considered, preference will be given to candidates who will develop an independent and/or collaborative research program that complements and draws from our strengths of the department and/or Cummings School.
Comparative Pathobiology is a multi-disciplinary department, with expertise and teaching responsibilities in neurosciences, physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, clinical and anatomic pathology, reproductive health, animal models of disease, laboratory animal medicine, biochemistry, and veterinary education. Research strengths in the department include neurosciences, with a focus on opioids, addiction, and developmental biology, pathology, and endocrine disease. Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, with strengths in emergency medicine, critical care, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, musculoskeletal disease, and infectious disease.
The Department of Comparative Pathobiology houses the Comparative Pathobiology and Genomics Shared Resource (CPGSR) and a Flow Cytometry Shared Resource. Other unique resources at Cummings School include the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory (BSL-3), Clinical Research Shared Resource and Clinical Trials Office, and participation in the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Our AAALAC-accredited laboratory animal care and use program supports large and small animal models, experimental surgery, regenerative medicine, ABSL2 and ABSL3 containment, MRI and CT imaging, and pathology.
The successful candidate will be expected to devote 18 - 25 weeks to educational activities. Time available for research and scholarly activity will be between 12 – 25 weeks, depending on the interests of the individual and external funding support. Research time allocation above 25 weeks is dependent on high levels of research, including salary support Time may be devoted to clinical or diagnostic activities, if relevant to the candidate. Service commitments are typically 3 – 5 weeks for an assistant professor. Five weeks are available for vacation and other time off. The exact distribution of activities, within the guidelines of the school, will be dependent on the interests and expertise of the successful candidate.
Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant area of expertise by the date of hire. A DVM degree is considered an asset. Post-doctoral experience is expected, although it may be replaced by other relevant experience. Excellent communication skills and a reputation for collegiality are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate the attributes required to excel in teaching and previous teaching experience is considered an asset. The successful candidate must have the potential to establish a successful, independent research program, at a level appropriate for the time available for research, as evidenced by publications, abstracts, thesis content, and presentations.

Cummings School is situated in Grafton, MA on a 600-acre semi-rural campus, forty-five minutes west of Boston and next door to Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts. There is a regional rail service stop adjacent to campus and easy access to cultural and sporting events. The campus is a short drive from beautiful beaches, mountains, and other unique features of New England. The area is a hub of biotechnology and higher education. The K-12 education system is excellent. Housing is readily available close to campus or in any number of surrounding towns.
