DESCRIPTION
The UC San Diego Mandeville Art Gallery has a five-decade history of presenting innovative art in the context of a major research university. The Mandeville Art Gallery is currently poised to enter an exciting new phase in its evolution: a major renovation to its existing gallery space and surrounding areas that will connect the gallery to other ambitious projects that are transforming our campus. From the revitalized Mandeville Art Gallery, to new buildings and neighborhoods and the arrival of the new light rail connecting campus to downtown San Diego, the shift in the campus's physical appearance will expand and enrich the student experience, serve the campus community, and spark collaborative research, creativity, and innovation.
Reporting to the Director of the Mandeville Art Gallery and in consultation with the Visual Arts facilities team, the the Mandeville Art Gallery Preparator performs all aspects of exhibition preparation at an operational level, to include space planning and management, installation planning and execution, construction of temporary room and walls, work direction of temporary professional employees and student installation crew, preparation of artwork including matting and framing, fabrication of exhibition components, training of student workers, materials and equipment research and purchasing, and exhibition de-installation.
The Mandeville Art Gallery Preparator will support the Director in his/her duties as primary registrar, and as such will be responsible for all receiving, conditioning, mounting, cleaning, framing, stretching, unpacking and packing of works of art in all media; use a wide variety of tools, hardware and equipment; and act as security guard or direct student employees to act as such during installation projects. The incumbent will also be responsible for primary reporting of artworks, and will liaise with insurance, transportation and shipping agents.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum three (3) years relevant experience, knowledge of museum operations and expertise in fine art handling procedures; experience and expertise in manual design techniques, matting and framing; knowledge of construction, carpentry and electrical skills; computer literate (MAC preferred), superior interpersonal and problem solving skills; knowledge of budget planning; must be a team player.
Carpentry skills and electronics installation skills.
Ability to follow all safety precautions for equipment and procedures while working on the job.
Knowledge and experience with museum exhibit development, production and installation.
Familiarity with computer interactive and audio-visual techniques as they apply to exhibit interactives.
Ability to work independently and effectively, without daily supervision, in order to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and produce results while working with frequent interruptions or changing priorities. Skill to follow through on assignments with attention to detail.
Demonstrated experience in communicating effectively in person, on the telephone, and in writing with a diverse population of people at all levels inside and outside of the university system. Good interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $42,303 - $49,757 Annually
