The Building Services Department provides routine, intermittent and restorative cleaning for all academic, research, residence hall, and athletic facilities on campus. We strive to fulfill the university's mission by providing students, faculty staff with top quality academic, research and employment experiences by maintaining a clean, healthy environment for our customers who occupy and utilize the offices, classrooms, laboratories, student residential, and public areas.
Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of a Building Service Foreman, the Builder Service Worker performs the necessary custodial work to meet and maintain Building Services' high standards of cleanliness and sanitation. Perform other duties closely related to those defined in the class specifications.
The Builder Service Worker will follow previously established routine work procedures and schedules, and on occasion, will receive written or oral instructions for non-routine work. Work for this position is generated by the need to provide sanitation and custodial services in university buildings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Classroom & Office Cleaning
Wash walls, clean and polish all furniture such as desks, filing cabinets, bookcases, shelves, doors, door frames, window frames, thresholds, pictures, lamps and phones with proper cleaners.
Dust all horizontal and vertical areas as needed.
Clean blackboards and erasers daily.
Maintain chalk, erasers and paper supplies as needed in classrooms and labs.
Clean and shampoo all upholstered furniture.
Floor Cleaning
Dust mop, sweep, wet mop and scrub floors in a safe and professional manner always using caution signs.
Clean, renew or renovate floor surface finishes spray buff, if necessary, to maintain a clean, high gloss appearance.
Strip, scrub, neutralize and refinish floors as needed or as directed by the supervisor.
Vacuum all carpeted areas regularly and extract and shampoo carpet as needed or as directed by the supervisor. Spot clean carpet stains as needed.
Restroom Cleaning
Clean, service, shine and sanitize daily, restroom floors, toilets, urinals and sinks.
Clean, service, shine and sanitize restroom lights, walls, windows, mirrors, chrome surfaces, showers, tubs, vents and benches.
Maintain soap and paper supplies each day. This must be done according to the department's restroom cleaning and sanitation procedures and with approved materials.
Snow & Trash Removal
Remove snow/ice from entryways and stairs, spread salt, pick up litter, trash, wastepaper and other debris from the interior of buildings.
Develop a schedule for thorough cleaning of all waste containers.
Empty recycling and garbage containers into appropriate receptacles
Glass Cleaning & Replacing Light Bulbs
Clean all building glass and partitions and all outside glass as high as possible with extension poles while standing on the ground.
Keep all elevator tracks clean, vacuumed and polished. Replace light bulbs, including exit lights in a safe manner.
Clean the fixture and diffuser or lens when replacing bulbs
Operating Equipment
Operate all equipment in a safe manner including automatic scrubbers and power sweepers (including rider type), all types of wet pick-ups and dry vacuums, power blowers, backpack vacuums, window washers and floor machines.
Ensure that all equipment is cleaned and properly stored at the conclusion of each job and make sure the janitorial closets are clean and organized.
Clean all floor pads after each use.
Clean wet and dry mops and hang up in janitorial closets after each use.
Change dirty mop heads as needed.
Miscellaneous Duties
Sweep and damp mop stairwells and landings on a regular basis.
Clean railings and walls in these areas.
Perform miscellaneous, related duties as assigned.
