Position Introduction The Drama Department at Vassar College is seeking a Scenic Designer to join our department as a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 2024.

Position Description We invite applications from scenic designers with demonstrated interest and experience in undergraduate teaching to apply. Candidates who can contribute to one or several of Vassar's rich multidisciplinary programs (such as Africana Studies, American Studies, Asian Studies, and/or Women, Feminist, and Queer Studies) are especially encouraged to apply. The teaching load in the first year is four courses. In ensuing years, faculty may either teach five classroom units, or teach four classroom units and provide flexible, closely mentored experiences for undergraduates. Some teaching assignments will be closely related to designing and advising on the department's busy production season (7-9 shows annually), but others will include additional design courses. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong evidence of professional design work. Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level is required, 1-3 years of experience is preferred. Experience and/or interest with sustainable design practices is preferred. Evidence of working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds is also preferred. In addition to having expertise in one area of design, the successful candidate should also be able and willing to mentor and teach elementary courses in other areas of the curriculum. An MFA in Scenic Design or a field related to Design is required by time of appointment.
Salary Wage Range Pay Transparency Disclosure: The annual base starting salary range for this position is $89,000 to $99,000 (USD). This range includes new faculty appointments beginning the first year of a standard tenure clock as well as Assistant Professors with previous tenure-line experience who will be on an accelerated tenure clock. When extending an offer of employment, Vassar College considers factors such as (but not limited to) candidates education/training, work experience, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations. This salary range represents the Colleges good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of posting. The starting salary for an Assistant Professor in this position with a PhD beginning the first year of a standard tenure clock in Fall 2024 is $93,000.
