Position Description

About the School of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STeM):
The School of STeM prepares students to confront globally significant issues with robust skills in content, communication, and problem-solving, integrating faith and learning from a Christian worldview. Offering a range of undergraduate degrees in fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, and more, our faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, with 85% holding terminal degrees.
Courses may include Programming, Networking, Cybersecurity, Computer Forensics, Database Management, Hardware and Software Support, and other areas according to the candidates expertise. SWU faculty carry 12-15 credit hour/semester load.
Position Overview:
Southern Wesleyan University’s School of STeM invites applications for a 9-month faculty position in Applied Computer Science/Computer Information Systems within the Department of Physical Science, Technology, and Mathematics to begin in January 2025 or August 2025. The position requires a commitment to teaching excellence, curriculum development, and service at the university and school levels.
Position Responsibilities:
- Teaching: Teach computer science courses to undergraduate students. Engage in innovative teaching methods and continuous improvement of the educational experience. SWU faculty normally carry a 12-15 credit hour/semester load.
- Curriculum Development: Improve and create courses, curriculum, and new programs related to computer science and information systems. Ensure that the curriculum reflects current trends and advancements in the field.
- Student Advising: Serve as the primary academic advisor for students in the Computer Information Systems major.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with faculty and students in research, curriculum development, academic program management, and community engagement projects.
- Service: Engage in service activities within the university and school. Participate actively in department, school, and university committees and initiatives.
Qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and students.
- Commitment to the mission and values of SWU’s School of STeM, including Christian faith, learning, professionalism, community, teamwork, integrity, and excellence.
The entry-level rank of the candidate will be determined by terminal degree, qualifications, and experience.
Preferences. Individuals who have experience serving with or leading in one or more of the following roles or areas may be preferred:
- Experience in course and curriculum development for face to face, hybrid, and online course delivery modalities.
- Experience in academic program coordination or and leadership of an academic program(s).
- Contribute to development in a specialty area such as, but not limited to, computer languages (Python, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails); cybersecurity; forensic computing; machine learning and XR (VR/AR/MR), or another area complementary to SWU’s present curriculum.
