In accordance with a detailed cleaning plan, the Custodian performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe and pleasant physical environment. Performs other tasks as assigned in emergency or unusual situations. Examples of additional work to be performed include but are not limited to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage and special event support. S/he is expected to clean up to 28,000-35,000 square feet of cleanable space per eight hour work day. Using standard tools, equipment, materials, and supplies of the trade and observance of all safety rules, regulation, and precautions, the custodian reports directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors and has additional duties that include, but are not limited to:
Clean hallways, entranceways, stairways and elevators, vacuum and spot clean carpets and upholstery, and free carpets of rips and strings, taping down clean edges as needed.
Wash and dust inside and outside ground floor level windows and sills of all exterior windows, clean and polish brass fixtures and rails, and dust and free handrails of cobwebs, washing both sides of internally placed windows.
Clean administrative spaces, laboratories and classrooms, and trash containers, removing litter from planters and other spaces and items as assigned.
Ensure economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University and department resources.
Draw and /or requisition supplies, parts and materials needed, using such items economically to avoid undue costs.
Keep supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
Represent the department with the University community and its visitors, behaving in a professional manner and keeping informed of departmental and University rules, regulations and guides pertaining to employment obligations including complying with attendance and clock in and out on time.
Work Interactions
This position reports directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors. The incumbent will perform essential or non-essential tasks as assigned by supervisor. Incumbent will also perform assignments made by the Manager of Custodial Services and/or the Night Operations Manager. Under certain circumstances including but not limited to, emergency snow removal, spills and flooding, the incumbent will perform assignments made by the Work Management Center, the Director of Facilities Management, the Resource Manager, the Infrastructure Manager and other department managers.
Requirements and Qualifications
HS Diploma or GED preferred
One year of custodial work experience is preferred
Valid and current driver's license from Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia
Basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures
Must be able to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center as well as complete a training program in building cleaning
