Detailed Description: The Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and visitors. The Wellness Center promotes health and well-being for the University community and this role ensures that the facility is well-maintained to support these efforts. The Custodian will open and / or close the building, depending on shift. Perform building rounds (interior and exterior) and inspections. Provide routine and non-routine support associated with the daily cleaning in the non-Athletic areas in the Center, (offices, lobbies, restrooms, fitness rooms, classrooms, lounges and outdoor gathering spaces). Typical routine duties include, but are not limited to: dusting, mopping, sweeping, wet mopping, and vacuuming, following health and safety guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, (especially high-touch areas like door handles, railings, and fitness equipment), sanitizing, replenishing supplies, removing trash, polishing furniture, operation of basic mechanical cleaning equipment and filling out simple forms.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communicate with Center tenants and visitors to ensure excellent customer service. Accommodate tenant preferences and special requests that support that offices' core responsibilities.
Provide friendly and courteous assistance to students, staff, and visitors, responding to inquiries or redirecting them to the appropriate department when needed.
Daily lock/unlock building depending on shift.
Clean and disinfect non-Athletic restrooms and fixtures (toilet, urinals, etc)
Keep restroom dispensers supplied with towels, soap, sanitary napkins, etc.
Vacuum carpets, rugs, mats.
Dust mop, sweep and wet mop floors.
Monitor public areas.
Clean and disinfect surfaces, especially high-touch areas like door handles, railings, and fitness equipment - including outside gathering spaces adjacent to the building.
Empty trash receptacles and replace liners.
Clean elevators and stairwells.
Straighten/arrange furniture.
Clean drinking fountains.
Spot clean carpets, rugs, walk-off mats.
Empty recycling containers.
Spot mop floors.
Spot clean windows, walls, doors, and other above floor surfaces.
Dust and/or clean furniture, windowsills, and other above floor surfaces.
Spray buff floors
Polish furniture and fixtures.
Strip and refinish floors.
Wash windows and blinds.
Shampoo carpets, rugs and walk-off mats.
Machine scrub floors.
Monitor cleaning supplies and equipment, reporting inventory levels and maintenance needs to supervisor.
Follow all University guidelines for safety, proper use of equipment, and chemical handling procedures.
Assist with priority projects which may include floor refinishing, moving furniture, upholstery cleaning
Assist other custodians, when necessary, in completing assigned tasks and/projects.
Perform related work as required and instructed.
Review daily event operation reports and anticipate unique needs due to events.
Special Conditions of Employment:
Employee is required to wear the uniform provided by USD.
Building is open 7 days a week, 12 months of the year from 7am -10pm most days. Work schedule will rotate with other Custodians and employee will be asked to work a rotating schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on department needs.
Background check: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of one year of related job experience required
Demonstrated proficiency in modern cleaning methods and techniques required
Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds required
Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions in English.
Ability to maintain good working relations with students, faculty, staff and guests
Ability to follow all university policies and procedures.
Ability to work alone or without close supervision.
Understanding of the importance of customer service and has the ability to follow-up as well as communicate with supervisor, campus community members and campus visitors.
Ability to complete simple forms and conduct simple inventories of supplies.
Ability to operate all mechanical cleaning equipment.
Understanding of and knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and MSDS rules and regulations.
Understanding of custodial processes and procedures and health and safety guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.
Be responsive and flexible to changing work schedule in order to support event operations including set-up and break down tasks.
Posting Salary: $19.17 - $21.31 per hour; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
