The Resource Recovery Operator B (Class B License minimum) works as part of a team of three 'B' operators and three 'C' Operators (Class C License) that make up Resource Recovery Services. The 'B' operators drive front loader trucks and roll off box trucks to collect refuse, recycling, compost, green waste, scrap metal, scrap wood and other commodities on the UC campus, participate in the sorting and processing of the materials, and the delivery of materials to the landfill, green waste, recycling and compost vendor sites, and other appropriate locations. The 'B' operators will also assist with collection of 64 gallon and smaller bins of recycling and compost on campus using box trucks and pickup trucks with lift gates and specialized tipper arm assemblies.

50% Front Loader Truck Driver Drive and operate a 25-ton front end loader refuse truck with hydraulic load and compacting unit, driving and operating in minimal access areas. This work requires early morning work hours and involves physically positioning dumpsters at various sites for collection. Participate in route scheduling and service over 150 dumpsters on campus, making route alterations as campus events require.
Pick up and Loading: Requires operator to safely pick up, transport and dispose of refuse as scheduled by supervision; record refuse onto the computer, monitor on-board Loadman weighing software, on-board dumpster load status software (Compology), and proceed on route to the next stop adaptively scheduled by the dumpster load status software (Compology), compacting load as necessary between stops. Operate cell phone and/or two-way radio to receive and send communications to supervisor and/or Communication Center.
Dumping: Operator must observe dumpster loads before dumping into compactor for foreign material that could damage compactor unit. Deliver loaded truck with compacted refuse to landfill or resource recovery vendor, requiring understanding of load weights to determine if auxiliary axle is required to be lowered.
Servicing: Perform required daily servicing of vehicle including: review service checklist for air, fuel and oil, visual safety inspection, checking hydraulic fluids, and verify the truck is operating properly. Vehicle checks are done in accordance with California Highway Patrol vehicle inspection regulations.
Data Collection: Daily data entry on the computer into Excel sheets by location of refuse collected, which includes: pickups per stop, number of dump runs, gallons of fuel used, and miles driven. Operators must learn and utilize on-board weight collection (Loadman) collection and monitor and report performance.
Cardboard, Mixed Paper and Mixed Container Recycling: Drive and operate a 25 ton front loading recycling truck with hydraulic load compacting unit to pick up cardboard and mixed recycling materials on the campus. Deliver those materials to various locations in the Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay area for processing.
20% Roll Off Box Truck Driver Drive and operate commercial roll-off-box trucks with a GVW reaching 47,000 lbs, utilizing a 40,000 lb rated 2 speed planetary type winch with a ' cable and a split frame with a hydraulic powered loading unit. The trucks service multiple sized 'roll-off-box' containers ranging from 10 cubic yards to 40 cubic yards. These roll-off-boxes are used to transport construction debris, green waste, recycling material, quarry materials for road maintenance and erosion control, landscape mulch, soil and other materials as needed. The University also has 5 food service compost compactors that are transported to the Marina Landfill in Monterey County. Drive and operate a roll off truck to pick up and haul recycle materials to the university recycle sort line for processing. Pick up and deliver various recycled materials in roll off containers to various recycle material processors in the Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay area.
Equipment Selection: With results based work orders, drivers are required to determine the appropriate sized truck to use with the appropriate sized containers given the type and quantity of material to be transported while considering job site limitations and access requirements.
Equipment Inspection: Drivers are required by DOT regulations and University policy to perform pre- and post-operation truck inspections as specified by supervision. Drivers are to submit truck mechanical inspection forms to the Central Garage no less than weekly.
Loading and Transporting: Drivers must load and off-load containers safely from the truck frame channels, and transport loaded containers as needed. They must be able to operate the equipment in narrow hillside alleyways amidst pedestrian and automotive traffic. Dumping, Off Loading and Securing:
Must be able to safely dump the load and off-load the containers as scheduled and directed by supervision.
To secure containers, drivers are responsible for leaving containers in accessible locations, out of traffic and not blocking access to facilities.
Record Keeping: Drivers will maintain records as specified by supervision of all daily activities involving the roll-off service.
20% Recycle bin collection and sorting MATERIAL COLLECTION
Drive and operate trucks with lift gates, safely driving and operating in minimal access and crowded areas. Requires physically moving recycling bins at various sites for collection. Participate in route scheduling that services several hundred recycling and compost bins on campus and make route alterations as campus events require. Materials collected include but is not limited to: Mixed containers, various grades of paper, compost, Styrofoam, batteries, film plastic, mixed hard plastics, and food scraps. Operate two-way radio and / or cell phone to receive and send communications to supervisor, staff, the Work Order Desk and the Communication Center. Requires the flexibility to accommodate occasional shift alterations as requested by supervision.
PICK UP AND LOADING Select and load the appropriate recycling containers on a truck for efficient completion of route and transfer of resource recovery materials. Properly position
TRANSPORTATION/UNLOADING Deliver containers to locations on campus; Deliver materials to the appropriate drop-off sites on or off campus; Unload truck and sort materials as needed, using proper safety procedures; Inspect materials unloaded for contaminants and remove as needed to maintain good quality of recycled materials; Keep areas around collection containers clean and safe
SERVICING Perform required daily inspection of vehicles including review of service checklist for visual safety inspection, fuel and oil, check fluids, and verify proper operation of all systems. Keep truck clean, and report any problems.
RECORDS Prepare daily tally sheets by location of material collected, including material type and volume per stop, and other information as required. Daily record time worked by job, area, and work order.
CONTAINER MAINTENANCE As required, pick up collection containers and transport for steam cleaning. Clean containers and replace. Replace labels on containers as needed. Deliver new and replacement containers as needed.
MATERIAL SORTING Assist with the sorting of materials on the sort line, paper bins, and other commodities as needed. This may involve delivery to the sorting location with front loader and/or roll off trucks, sorting on the line, and transporting sorted commodities.
10% Assist as Needed with Equipment Services At the discretion of the Assistant Superintendent, Resource Recovery, assist when needed with Equipment Services Operations.
Experience operating three axle trucks or larger, weighing in excess of twenty tons with a full load.
Experience operating heavy equipment; ability to diagnose equipment operational problems, knowledge in performing heavy equipment adjustments.
Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to interact and work effectively with campus community and the ability to exercise diplomacy in dealing with diverse groups of people.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to complete required logs and records for reporting purposes in a timely fashion.
Ability to read and write and follow oral and written instructions.
Experience operating front end loading refuse trucks with hydraulic lifting arms and compaction body.
Experience operating roll-off-box units with planetary winch type cable to pull containers on to frame rail trays.
Possess knowledge/experience of road and path asphalt repairs, fence and retaining wall construction/repair.
Ability to operate mowing tractors on grasslands and in dusty conditions with or without accommodations.
