The Information Services team is looking for talented and creative individuals to join us in our quest to make it easier for the Cornell research community to manage their research. We consider our environment to be its own research laboratory where team members are encouraged to voice new ideas and try new approaches. We're early adopters in the use of new technologies that can help us to automate development and deployment of the application and data products we build or integrate with. The Data Engineer is an important member of the Information Services team, responsible for analyzing and making sense of our data, developing useful reports, and engineering a sustainable underlying data infrastructure. Some time is spent working on the top of the stack, keeping the front-end of our data web apps up-to-date as well as working together with the data team on DevOps tasks to automate deployment and monitoring. The position works together with and takes direction from the Lead Data Engineer.
What You Will Do:
- Work with our Product Managers and customers to understand business needs and system requirements
- Write code, e.g. Python for data, Ruby and Ember.js for web apps, Terraform for DevOps
- Review code from other data team members through pull requests
- Analyze data and develop reports, dashboards, APIs and other data products
- Work with the Lead Data Engineer to develop and maintain our data infrastructure that connects the data products we create and the applications and data sources we integrate with
- Update our data web apps and components, including Ruby on Rails, Ember.js, and D3.js
- Work on infrastructure design, automation, and maintenance in cloud and on-premises hosting environments (current setup - Terraform: Infrastructure-as-code, CodeBuild: Build tools, Docker/ECS/ECR: containerization, Fargate: Serverless tasks, CloudWatch/Prometheus: Monitor/Log/Trigger, S3/RDS: Storage).
- Troubleshoot potential data issues reported with production reporting systems and integrations
- Create and test data visualizations to aid understanding of research administration data
What You Will Need:
- 2 or more years working in a data analyst, data engineer, or other data science role
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- 2 or more years of experience with:
- SQL and relational databases
- Python data science ecosystem (Pandas, Jupyter Notebooks, etc.)t
- Data visualization using consumer tools, e.g. Tableau
- Working as part of a team managing data products and applications through the full development cycle w/development and production environments
- Github best practices, e.g. continuous integration, branch management, pull requests
- Non-traditional/NoSQL data formats (json, xml, csv)
- 1 or more years of experience with:
- DevOps, specifically AWS, Terraform, and Docker
- Front-end development with Ruby on Rails (use of Sinatra preferred)
- Front-end development with .js frameworks, specifically with Ember, D3
- Understanding of popular data warehouse data structures (e.g., star, snowflake)
- Meticulous attention to detail and documentation habits
- Excellent communication and organization skills
What We Prefer:
- Bachelor's degree or higher with a concentration in a quantitative field such as finance, quantitative marketing, engineering, mathematics/statistics
- Experience with Tableau
- Experience with Salesforce
- Experience in higher education
- Experience with research administration
- Understanding of finance and accounting concepts and data
